WHAT WE DO

The Programs That Embody The Mission

The Davies Ecosystem

The Davies Shelters Ecosystem is how we bring the ideas of Sacred Worth, Restorative Journey, and Welcome Community together to help our guests build a foundation to support a stable lifestyle.

The Shelters

Davies Men's House

Our men’s shelter houses 16 men and features a commercial-grade kitchen, community garden, and ADA-compliant facilities. The Men’s House serves roughly 100 men each year.

Davies House For Women & Children

Our women’s shelter houses 8 single women and 4 women with children, with room for up to 14 children at a time. The Davies Shelters’ administrative offices are also located in an upstairs apartment on the property of the Women’s House

Case Management

Our case managers play a vital role in empowering our guests to achieve independent living. They nurture relationships with each guest, intentionally coordinating care that is safe, effective, equitable and person-centered.

Initial Meeting

Each guest’s journey begins with being accepted into a safe and stable environment. Starting with an initial tour of their respective shelters that include all the amenities of a supportive home such as; meals, laundry, showers, wi-fi access and TV, guests meet face to face with a case manager. Together, after gathering personal information about life before arriving, they discuss customized goals and a plan to enact each step to complete.

Counselors

Within 72 hours of arrival, guests can expect access to our counseling services, and connecting to local community resources:

– Mental Health Care: Davies Counseling Services, Highland Rivers Health, Elevation House, etc…

– Drug & Alcohol Recovery: Living Proof Recovery

– Career Resources: Goodwill Career Center, Rome Floyd Chamber Jobs Page, Brigs & Associates, etc…

– Obtaining ID & Benefits: DFACS, Social Security Administration, DMV, etc…

Independent Living & Re-entry into the Community

After accessing the right resources and coordinating Person-centered care, guests and case managers work together to search for housing, establish a budget for savings and bills, and procuring anything else that is necessary for a smooth re-entry into the community. Guests also gain knowledge of the local bus routes and are equipped with other tools to create the change they desire.

Counseling

Homelessness causes trauma and due to lack of resources over 60% of our guests have unmet mental health needs. Each guest can access our counseling services so that they can work towards processing trauma, strengthen intrapersonal awareness, learn methods and tools to equip them to handle their journey ahead. We facilitate weekly process groups and personal sessions for current and former guests.

Counselors

Weekly group counseling and individual counseling sessions are provided by our Executive Director Brian Harris, APC and our Director of Operations Alex Callahan, APC.

Counseling for Outside Clients

The Davies Shelters is now able to offer counseling to a limited number of outside clients. The Fee structure for outside clients is pay-what-you-can with a minimum of $55 per session. The Davies Shelter does not accept 3rd party payments.

Individual therapy modalities may range from brief therapies to longer-term modalities of psychotherapy depending on individual needs. Clients may have sessions from once per month to two times per week as needed.

If you would like to schedule an appointment, download and complete this fillable pdf and email it to Brian Harris at counseling@daviesshelter.com. Once you’ve emailed the contact form, we will reach out within 48 hours to schedule a phone call consultation to discuss what our work together might look like.

"Good Faith Estimate"

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.
  • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.
  • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 1-800-985-3059.

 Davies Farm & Bus Fare

The connection between housing insecurity and food insecurity are ever present and often leave many in our community choosing one over the other. Knowing that this is a heavy choice to make, we expanded our community garden and launched our mobile farmers market in 2019. This program expansion means that we can provide fresh produce, educational outreach and employment opportunities to low-income, low-access neighborhoods.

Food Insecurity

Nearly a third of all Romans struggle to pay for basic necessities (i.e. food & housing).

Feeding America estimates that there are 13,580 food-insecure people in Floyd County, GA – roughly 14% of the population. These households must often choose between food and rent – which can eventually lead to increased housing insecurity.

Davies Farm at South Meadows

In 2019, we expanded the community garden behind the Davies Men’s Shelter to a 2-acre farm in South Rome. Combined, both the Campbell-Rife Community Garden and the Davies Farm at South Meadows help us supplement the food we serve at both shelters and also stock our Farm Bus. Brad Swancy, our Farm Manager, leads a small group of Berry Bonner Scholars and other volunteers to develop the land at the Farm and raise enough produce to supplement  the food we serve at both shelters and also stock the Farm Bus for weekly stops between May & October.

Bus Fare

Bus Fare is a Cooperative Partnership between The Davies Shelters, The Community Kitchen and Fork Spoon and Plate as we bring each of our resources directly to the community. For more Information, check out the Bus Fare page
